The 2005 grape crop in the Lodi area was light, allowing the grapes to have more intense flavors. That’s just what the Wine Maker Tavares wanted. “I intentionally left the grapes longer on the vines to increase (the sugars),” he said. “There is a boldness in the taste.”  There also is a balance of oak flavors, which was created by aging his red wines in a combination of one-year-old and two-year-old American and French barrels.

Carignane CA Red Wine

2005 CARIGNANE

The Carignane grape originated in Northern Spain. This grape is noted for its deep purple color, high tannins (tannins are substances found in the seeds, skins, and stems of grapes, as well as in oak barrels), and  high alchol content. The Carignane grape produces wines that are fruity and spicy in nature. The 2001 Carignane has a deep berry flavor and a spicy, mineral finish. Just before the finish, there are hints of licorice.

2005 CAB-SHIRAZ

Recognized by the 2006 West Coast Wine Competition as the Best of Class in the Red Bordeaux Blends category.  67% Cabernet Sauvignon 33% Shiraz. The Shiraz grape originated in the Middle East. Shiraz (Australia)  Syrah (French) Shiraz is deep in color and tannic (tannins are substances found in the seeds, skins, and stems of grapes, as well as in oak barrels), producing a wine with strong spice and pepper qualities. It takes on characteristics of sweet black berries, black currants and plum, with a hint of smokiness. Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz contribute flavor and structure to this multi-variety wine. The Cab-Shiraz blend from Lockeford-grown grapes, is a big blast of snappy red currants. The heavy tannic finish is of dark oak smoke and tar. This wine hasn’t any finesse; it’s a direct hit.

2005 CUVEE

45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Carignane, 10% Zinfandel. CUVEE, French for wines blended from different vineyards, or different varieties.  It has a full heavy body taste, but a light wine base and finish. The berry taste at the front of the palate is more moderate and precedes a complex finish of leather, smoke and chocolate.
Great sipping wine – you do not need to limit this to drinking with a meal.  It’s great on a hot summer afternoon.  This wine can be served slightly chilled and will complement just about any meal.

2002 WHITE PORT
Our White port was awarded a Silver Medal at the 2006 West Coast Wine Competition.  White Port made with Flame Tokay grapes and is fortified with 190 proof raisin brandy. A blend that makes for an after dinner wine which is sweet, fruity, and light. The White Port is a light port that has a sweet caramel front and an almond finish, with a slight raisin aftertaste. The port is very drinkable. Even non-port drinkers will enjoy an after-dinner glass.

This port is great with spicy foods as well as chocolates (white or dark) and enhances fresh fruits such as strawberries or pears – actually any type of berry goes well with it. Beautiful bottle makes this a great gift item.

Flame Tokay grapes (a sweet to dry grape) originated in Hungary.
